Project Introduction
Manager requested that I convert their existing flash-based online project which was text heavy to HTML5 and divide it into smaller modules to reduce the learner cognitive load.
They suggested using Articulate Storyline as it was most compatible with their LMS and we decided to completely rebuild the training. I proposed designing a short, minimal text-based module that reviews the required topics. The client and SME approved this approach.
Design Approach
After reviewing the initial content and talking to people who recently completed the training it was evident that the leaner was overwhelmed with the amount of text in the training and were struggling to complete it in a single day.
For these reasons, I decided to concentrate my instructional design approach to main task
Reduce cognitive load by including less text on slide, include relevant visuals and taking out the fluff and content repetition.
Include Learner freedom by including training links to content covered in other training in the resources, giving them freedom to choose and reference the material they want so encourage positive and need based learning.
With the main task in mind I recreated a storyboard for three modules and reviewed it with client and SME. Once the storyboard was approved I created a prototype of the project to create the visual experience for the client and SME. The client liked the new improved look and approved the modules for development.
For instance I converted text heavy multiple slides of content into a slide that details the modules that will be reviewed and the expected learning outcomes.
Including relevant images, graphics and charts helped in keeping learner focused for the duration of training
Two principles reducing cognitive load and including learner freedom guided my approach throughout the project.
Providing optional content like this one piqued learner interest and gave them an opportunity to learn more without forcing information on them.
When the learner clicked on brown rectangles they were presented with the option to learn more.
As you can tell, I used click based interactivity to engage and manage learner cognitive load.
Including relevant images, graphics and charts helped in keeping learner focused for the duration of training.
I also included a question bank with 20 questions to track progress and completion of the training module.
These questions included, true/ false, multiple choice, drag and drop to keep the learner engaged.
